I was responding to a comment on the FP on David’s article about buying a Trabant because, you know, I kindof love Trabants...

Legitimately....did I say anything in my first comment in a way that could be construed as rude...? 0_o

I thought I was pretty polite? I didn’t call him an idiot or say, ‘No, you’re wrong’....I was just pointing out a legitimate point about a rare car a lot of people assume was COMPLETELY made of a material when it wasn’t?

I’m not trying to be sarcastic...did I legitimately say something rude....? I didn’t think I did...? What crawled up this guy’s butt ?

I don’t usually read the comments, TBH, but I noticed his comment and replied to explain they did, in fact contain steal as well as Duroplast when I posted one saying David should get one because I love the Trabant and it would, in some ways, be easier to keep going on his trip than the Chrysler would be....I mean...the Trabant has mechanicals as complex as a block of wood...

You didn’t do anything rude. I’m not even sure the other person even knew about the metal under the composite material. They are acting like somebody who made a mistake, had it pointed out and then refuses to admit it was a mistake. The typical response is “That was a joke. Couldn’t you tell?” It’s more comforting to their ego to go onto the offensive than to admit their error.

Agreed. But in reference to the article itself, I think people should never be advocating for David Tracy to buy more cars, after he made a series of articles detailing why he had to get rid of most of his fleet.

And in reference to your post specifically, I had no idea about any of that, or really anything substantial about Trabants other than I think they look neat, were generally rather under- powered, and that they were from East Germany.

The user name was a clear indicator of what you might be in for.

That being said, don’t let it faze you. If this is the way they want to speak to people, eventually the only one listening will be there self. Flip them off it makes you feel a bit better, and never dwell on it again.

Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from with that...I didn’t think I was being rude! I’m a teacher by trade, so I was just looking at it as a teaching moment to explain that the car, did, indeed still have steel in it as well as the Duroplast!

Sadly I’m 34 and still live with mom until I can buy my own house (with a garage!!!) , haha...I could get an apartment, but I don’t want an apartment as you can’t get value back out of those as your rent just disappears into the ether, so she’s kindly letting me live home while paying a little ‘rent’ (groceries and such) while I save up.....I have a pretty sizeable downpayment saved now, but COVID and the housing market going apeshit here and prices going through the roof locally means it’ll probably be at least another year before I can worry about getting my own place :/

I was on the fence about including that as an insult but hoped that the implied “no intention of working,  nice guy” would show through. In this economy, I begrudge few people a basement as long as mom is not also still waiting on them hand and foot and they don’t spend their days insulting people on the internet.

I guess I’m going against the consensus here; while you weren’t an outright jerk, there was absolutely nothing to be gained by stepping on the joke. If you really felt like that factual detail needed to be made clear, a comment on the post itself would have served. It’s not like that was the only joke about a Duraplast body not offering David enough rust potential.

I’ve found Wasabi Buttplug to be much more reasonable than the screen name led me to expect, and wouldn’t call him a troll - there are at least a half-dozen regulars I can think of, not in the greys, who soil the FP comment section near daily. He’s not one of ‘em.

Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from. I only replied as I noticed his comment. I wasn’t going to read through every single one looking for similar comments to reply to or anything. I think him calling me out as having issues ( ‘Was it a Birthday Clown’?) was entirely necessary though...I didn’t say anything mean against him at all, I just offered information.

Yeah, that was a weird response, but offering facts as a counterpoint to an easy, lazy joke is akin to explaining the joke - it sucks all the fun out of it.
